The pair have never played together. It is the first duel between the 23-year-old Australian and the Canadian, who is two years his junior.

De Minaur pushes Swiss qualification aside

De Minaur, already a winner on the North American hard-court swing in Atlanta this season, stormed into the second round in Cincinnati with a very easy win over Swiss qualifier Henri Laaksonen, world No. 102.

The Aussie took control of the game with an early break in the opener and although the Swiss saved six more break points in his next service game, the pressure eased in the end and he gave serve again as de Minaur went ahead.

And another early break in set number two put de Minaur on track to victory, with another break serving to underline his dominance.

The game was over in just over an hour.

Augur-Aliassime licks his wounds

Augur-Aliassime enjoyed a first-round bye in Cincinnati thanks to his seeding, but he’s still metaphorically licking his wounds after what happened to him in Montreal last week.

There he chased his first Masters title in front of his home fans and was beaten in straight sets by Casper Ruud in the quarterfinals, winning just three games ahead of the Norwegian.

He would have spent the past week thinking about that game and will now try to bounce back in Cincinnati, where he also finished in the last eight in 2021.

A good run this week will help erase last week’s memories.

De Minaur v Augur-Aliassime prediction and tip

This should be a good match between the two men but Augur-Aliassime had the benefit of extra recovery and may have increased the motivation to do well after what happened to him in Montreal. He will start the third round as a favourite.
