forecast

Defending US Open winners Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury meet Wesley Koolhof and Neal Skupski in Friday’s US Open men’s doubles championship match, but the two Brits will be on opposite sides of the net.

On Thursday afternoon, the top-seeded duo of Ram and Salisbury narrowly defeated thirteenth-seeded pairing Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah 7-5 4-6 7-6 (6). The American and his British partner successfully scored tactical victories at the net in the competition’s second longest-running doubles match.

The world’s top-ranked duo, Ram and Salisbury, now lead Cabal and Farah 6-1. Also, they had only lost two sets during that year’s US Open. The American-British duo would become only the second team in the Open Era, after Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde in 1996, to successfully defend their men’s doubles crown if they won this year’s championship.

Meanwhile, Koolhof and Skupski won the first set 6-4 and the second set with an lead. However, Marcelo Arevalo and Jean-Julien Rojer, their rivals, fought back to take the match. Koolhof and Skupski clinched the second set to win the match 6-4, 7-5, including 13 deuce points and some challenging lobs and groundstrokes from them.

This year’s top seeds are Ram and Salisbury, who are joined by the only remaining American in the men’s doubles tournament. The Dutch-British team still holds the Tour record for most wins, finals and crowns in 2022.

The stakes are high as, in addition to the championship, the winner at Arthur Ashe Stadium is expected to move up to the top of the world men’s doubles rankings. Since starting their collaboration in January, Koolhof and Skupski have made this their main goal.

Top seeded Ram and Salisbury prevailed after three hours and 14 minutes in a tense semi-final match, winning 79% (54/68) of their points on first serve. They showed courage by coming back from their break in the third set.

In the Grand Slam on hard courts, Ram and Salisbury now have a combined record of 16-2. Last year they won the championship game against Bruno Soares and Jamie Murray, won their second major prize as a team and are expected to defend the title.
