Rublev tries to overcome disappointment at the Canadian Open

Last year’s finalist Andrey Rublev will try to overcome his disappointment at the Canadian Open and start well in Cincinnati. Last week the world No. 8 left Montreal without winning a match after being beaten in straight sets by Dan Evans in the second round.

Rublev has otherwise shown brilliant form throughout the season. He has won three titles from three finals and brings a record of 35-13 into the tournament.

The 24-year-old is 7-4 in Cincinnati. He beat Daniil Medvedev in the semifinals last year, but lost to Alexander Zverev in the title duel.

The Russian is a solid hard-court player and has surfaced 21-6 this year, including two titles in Marseille and Dubai. He won his third title of the season on clay in Belgrade.

The 11-time Tour Level Champion will be hoping for a quick start against a familiar opponent he’s been dominating lately.

Fognini beats Ramos Vinolas

He came into the main draw as a lucky loser and Fabio Fognini capitalized on the opportunity as he defeated Spain’s Albert Ramos-Vinolas in straight sets on Tuesday.

The Italian saved 4 of 4 break points in the opener and three in the final game of the game to beat the Spaniard 6-2, 6-3 in an hour and 19 minutes and improve his Cincinnati record to 7-8. Fognini’s best performance so far in the tournament was a quarter-final in 2014.

The 3-year-old, who is ranked 61st, hit 27 winners and 7 aces and made 25 unforced errors during the first round of the competition. He had seven opportunities to break world No. 40 and he capitalized on four of those chances.

Fognini had recovered from a set deficit in the first round of qualifying to beat Kwon Soon-woo, but he lost his second round of qualifying to Marcos Giron in straight sets. But he still found a place in the peloton and is trying to make it a success. He’s 15-16 in the main draws this year, with semi-final placements in Rio and Belgrade being his best.
