Lorenzo Sonego versus Gilles Simon head to head

There has only been one previous meeting between these two and it took place on the clay courts of the Cagliari Open last year. Sonego was an easy winner.

Sonego passes Karatsev

Having entered this competition with a rather stunning record of just one second-round appearance in the last six tennis tournaments, Sonego was an underdog in his opening match against Aslan Karatsev.

In the end, however, Sonego came to a 7-5, 6-3 win in a match that lasted almost two hours.

Sonego took a 3-1 lead in the first set only to see that slip away as Karatsev broke back. Shortly after, however, Sonego managed to break Karatsev when he served to stay in the set 5-6, with the Italian winning on love.

A similar thing happened in the second set as Sonego took a 3-1 lead and lost serve for the second straight game. This time, however, Sonego Karatsev immediately broke back to wrap things up.

Can he now make it two for two for the first time since Wimbledon this year?

Simon Shocker for Goffin

Simon, who has dropped to 175th in the world, is in the last throes of his tennis career and unsurprisingly the 37-year-old went into his opener at odds of 14/5 to defeat David Goffin.

He did just that as he defeated the Belgian 6-3, 6-3 to advance to the second round for the first time since June this year.

Simon was on the court for an hour and 33 minutes, completing the first set quickly and then overcoming a collapse in the second to claim the win.

He will still have a tough time, but against a player better known for his ability on clay, Simon could give himself that chance.

Sonego v Simon prediction and tip

While Sonego starts as a big favorite here, the 21/10 odds for a Simon win look enticing. He could win a set with Simon.
