Virat Kohli’s Fifty vs Hong Kong is something we would have taken for granted in the past – Rohan Gavaskar

Former India national cricket team player Rohan Gavaskar said modern batting champion Virat Kohli’s half-century would have been taken for granted against a team like Hong Kong in the past.

The 33-year-old performed very well with the willow in India’s 40-round win over Hong Kong on Wednesday at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Kohli hit a good 59 runs from 44 balls, including 1 fours and 3 sixes, against the Nizakat Khan-led side and he also had a brilliant 98*-run partnership with Suryakumar Yadav.

During an interaction on Sports 18 show Sports Over the Top, the former Indian cricketer was asked his thoughts on whether Kohli’s half century was a one-off event or whether he has started to return to old form. He responded that it was not fair to judge Kohli’s form by his performance against a weaker opponent like Hong Kong “compared to the skill level and the type of performances Virat has shown in the past”. He explained:

“The fact that we have to talk about Virat Kohli getting half a century against Hong Kong doesn’t do justice to the skill and the kind of performances Virat has shown in the past, I think.

“Half a century against Hong Kong would be something we would have taken for granted in the past with Virat going out to bat, with all due respect to Hong Kong because that’s what he’s done against most teams.”

Gavaskar said he was confident Kohli’s half-century against Hong Kong was not a one-off, but rather a sign that the modern legend is returning to its former glory. He said:

“As any Indian cricket fan will tell you, nobody hopes this is an isolated case. We hope Virat gets back in shape because we’ve seen what Virat can do, what Virat is capable of. He showed insight.

“He’s been going through a bit of a rough patch, he’s been through a terrible patch and like you said hopefully that bodes well for the future. Before this World Cup we need players like Virat who are world champions to be in the best shape of their lives.”
