Jiangnan culture is a culture that originated in the southern areas of the Yangtze River, mainly in Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Shanghai. It is part of the concept of traditional Chinese culture, including unique literary tradition, architectural art, lifestyle, etc.
“To study Jiangnan culture, regional human geography should be understood,” said Ge Jianxiong, senior professor at Fudan University while sharing his thoughts at the forum. “The Hangzhou-Jiaxing-Huzhou area where Deqing is located is a transition zone between hills and plains, and when people settled in the early days, they chose such a place with the advantages of hills and plains,” added he added.
According to Professor Ge, there are also many early sites in these areas, where rich resources provide a fairly rich material basis for economic and cultural development. He added that it is more important that people carry on, inherit and develop Jiangnan culture in a down-to-earth way based on the heritage of history.
“In recent years, there have been more and more academic institutions studying Jiangnan culture, and I believe that today we should look at Jiangnan culture in the context of globalization, not only as a historical thing, but also as a contribution to the human civilization,” said Professor Liu Shilin, Dean of Urban Science Research Institute of Shanghai Jiaotong University. Professor Liu also believed that against the backdrop of the global ecological crisis and the intensification of social contradictions, the Chinese nation’s original and sustained cultural wisdom, including Jiangnan culture, can enable the building of an inclusive and sustainable way of production and life.
Deqing country head Wang Bo, while representing the local government, said the government is implementing the Source Culture Traceability Project. He also said the administration will focus on building a comprehensive exhibition area of the “original culture” in the south of the Yangtze River by integrating the functional carriers of urban culture such as county museums and archeological site parks, etc.
Deqing has excellent geographical location, natural talent and deep cultural heritage, where famous mountains, wetlands and ancient cities converge. The area also has a long history of manufacturing jade, casting swords, making porcelain, raising cultured pearls, etc.
